Undergraduate and graduate students may apply for paid and unpaid internships in Congressman King’s Washington, D.C. office. Interns gain valuable experience that can be applied to many different career fields. Intern applicants can be sure they will gain a well-rounded experience that includes:

Job Description

Each intern’s experience is unique, but there are some things that can be expected. Some clerical work is expected of interns, such as processing incoming mail, answering phone calls, and receiving visitors to the office and conducting tours of the Capitol Building. Additionally, interns may be called upon to complete policy-related research and writing assignments. This may include attending committee hearings, conducting background research, drafting issue memos, or summarizing legislative activity on specific issues. Interns will be expected to learn how to use the resources of the Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress, develop an understanding of debate in the Chamber of the House of Representatives, and complete other educational/training programs as required.

Like any college course, you will get out of an internship what you put into it. If you are able to stay organized and alert and maintain your common sense, you will emerge from your internship with a wealth of knowledge about the legislative process and the work of a congressional office.

Internships are available for the fall and spring semesters, as well as during the summer. Interns are eligible for a modest stipend, and arrangements can be made through your school for academic credit.

Requirements

Students should be residents of the State of Iowa, and preference is given to residents of the Fifth Congressional District. No particular major is required, though a demonstrated interest in the political process is preferred. This could include majors such as political science, pre-law, history, and communications/journalism, or active involvement in political student groups or student government. Successful interns will be responsible, outgoing, self-motivated, and hard working. Strong writing and computer skills are required. Flexibility, initiative, reliability, and a desire to learn will enhance your internship experience.
