Surface Transportation Reauthorization

Surface Transportation Reauthorization

On April 14, 2009, Congressman King submitted the following list of High Priority Projects to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for inclusion in the Surface Transportation Reauthorization bill that the House is slated to consider and pass before the current authorization for our nation’s surface transportation programs expires on September 31, 2009.  Congress writes a new Surface Transportation Reauthorization bill approximately every 5 years, and the legislation dictates how the federal government will fund and prioritize our nation’s investments in transportation infrastructure. The list below outlines the transportation infrastructure projects in the Fifth Congressional District that Congressman King has asked the Committee to include in the bill. The projects are listed in descending order by amount of funding requested:

- $43,200,000 for construction of four-lane US Highway 20 in Woodbury County, Iowa;

- $11,760,000 for planning, design, engineering, environmental review, acquisition of right of way, and reconstruction of pavemenmlaht, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, sidewalks, street lighting, and traffic signals of West Broadway in Council Bluffs, Iowa;

- $8,000,000 for Interstate 29 reconstruction and utility relocation in Sioux City, Iowa;

- $5,000,000 for design, property acquisition, and construction of 18th St Overpass in Sioux City, Iowa;

- $3,470,000 for design engineering, construction engineering, geotechnical investigation, right of way acquisition, and construction of a west access road in Ida Grove, Iowa;

- $2,500,000 to plan, design, acquire right-of-way and property, mitigate wetlands, and construct new pavement and shoulders for a 4.5 mile portion of Iowa Highway 86 in Dickinson County, Iowa; and

- $1,500,000 for design and construction of downtown rail crossing upgrades in Sioux City, Iowa
