Washington, D.C.—In his first Inaugural Address, George Washington said, “The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty, and the destiny of the republican model of government, are justly considered deeply, perhaps as finally, staked on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.” America has enjoyed freedom for 228 years now, and our most revered leaders are remembered for their commitment to the responsibility of defending liberty worldwide. This July 4th holiday, it is important to realize that our freedom is not only our right, but also our responsibility. If democracy is infectious, we as a nation took the task upon ourselves to spread it when we initiated this experimental government. America has been there to guide other nations to sovereignty throughout our history, and this week, after decades of dictatorship, Iraq is becoming the newest Constitutional Republic. It has been said that “American citizen” is the noblest title any one can bear. The responsibility to live up to this title is upon all of us, but, unfortunately, there are those who don’t want to own up to it. There is one America that is ashamed of our past, uncertain of our future, and lacks respect for the principles of personal responsibility. There is another America – the one I belong to – that cherishes our nation’s rich history and is confident in our potential. As America and its national parties appear increasingly divided over the destiny of our nation, it is time for each of us to decide which America we belong to. Freedom was gifted to each one of us, and if Americans don’t defend liberty, who will? What we need in our leaders is a long term goal and a clear vision of what we want America to be in future generations. I submit that we are all standing the watchtower of liberty, with the hope that one day the entire world will enjoy freedom. This year, as you look into the beautiful, clear Iowa sky to watch the 4th of July fireworks display, take a moment to think of the Iraqi people, who this year too, for the first time, can look to the sky as citizens of a free nation. |
