House Debates King Amendment Freeing Up $601 Million for Border Wall Funding

Jun 25, 2019
Press Release

Washington, D.C.- Congressman Steve King releases video of debate occurring in the House of Representatives this afternoon relating to an amendment he has offered to HR 3351 that frees up $601 million in funding contained in the underlying legislation for use by President Trump in the construction of a Border Wall.

The King Border Wall Funding Amendment specifically strikes a provision (Section 126) currently in the underlying legislation that would prevent the Trump Administration from tapping into funds contained within the Treasury Department's Civil Asset Forfeiture Fund for use on border enforcement efforts.

Excerpts from Congressman King’s remarks urging passage of the amendment:

"We have a President who was elected with a mandate to secure our border. This has been an ongoing battle for the last two-and-a-half years, and still the resources are short. I think we should have done a better job in the previous Congress to get that money into this project.  The President is going where he can to find the resources to keep his campaign promises, and so I certainly want to support that by striking that language and allowing the President to then have access to what amounts to $601 million dollars that would be freed up by my amendment." . . .

"We need to let the President be the President. He's declared a National Emergency and we need to strike this language from the bill so that the President has the latitude to do that which the people have elected him for. " . . .

"We must secure our border if we are to be a sovereign nation. This is a piece of it. I support the President."

King was joined on the floor by Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA), who encouraged the House to adopt King's Border Wall Funding Amendment.  Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) spoke in opposition. King has requested a roll call vote be held on his amendment.
