King Introduces Sunshine in Academic Admissions Act

Jun 11, 2015
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Steve King released the following statement after introducing H.R. 2720 , the Sunshine in Academic Admissions Act. This bill requires institutions of higher education to report annually on the use of race, color, or national origin in the admissions process.

“Citizens and taxpayers have a right to know whether federally funded institutions of higher education are treating student applications differently depending on the student’s race, color, or national origin,” said King. “Further, they need to know the way in which these factors are weighted and the consequences it will have to students.

My legislation would require federally funded institutions of higher education to make public through annual reports their use of race, color, and national origin, so that federal and state enforcement agencies and interested persons can monitor the schools. Further, it gives students opportunities based on their own merits alone, not race, color or national origin and guarantees equal opportunity for all rather than special privileges for some.

My bill instills transparency into the academic admissions process of our nation’s colleges and universities. I encourage my colleagues in the House to support this bill.”
